Imagine being trapped in a desolate land and there is only one source of water, one source of food. Would you go look for it? Would you traverse mountains to find it? That is exactly the story of the giraffe in this painting as he pauses for a moment to look upon what he has been searching for in the barren wilderness as if to say, “I finally found it!” As I painted this piece, I found myself wrapped up in a similar journey. I had one goal, finish this painting! I started with picking my mood, subject, and colors out of a jar. Then I was tasked to mixing it all together into a cohesive painting. Never was I met with such resistance in not only drafting the piece but even just finishing it. I almost abandoned it all together as I started coloring the giraffe. As I pushed through finishing it, I realized my journey to finish was a lot like the giraffe's journey in the painting. He probably traveled long, hot days to the point of exhaustion, almost giving up as he crests the final hill. But he pushes himself up the hill as what he has been searching for finally comes into view. Now he can rest, his quest's end in sight. Life is now in view. That is how I felt when I finished the piece. I did it! I think everyone can relate to this story, we all have experienced the struggle as we try to accomplish anything worth while in life. But may this painting remind you that just when you are about to give up, the journey is the most tiring just before you arrive at your destination. Push through, you will overcome if you persevere.
